The wet or monsoon season, from May to October, brings heavy rainfall, which significantly increases the water levels in the Mekong River, limiting accessibility to some areas. However, this season breathes a new life into the archipelago’s landscapes, with lush greenery and gushing waterfalls making the scenery even more dramatic.
What to See
One of the main attractions in Si Phan Don is the spectacular Khone Phapheng Falls. Dubbed as the “Niagara of the East,” it is the largest waterfall in Southeast Asia by volume. The powerful cascades, surrounded by lush vegetation, present an awe-inspiring sight and are a testament to the mighty Mekong River.
Don Khon and Don Det, two smaller islands connected by a historic railway bridge, are known for their relaxed atmosphere and natural beauty. Don Det is the hub of backpackers, with budget-friendly accommodation and a vibrant nightlife scene. Don Khon is quieter and home to serene beaches, colonial-era remnants, and a chance to see the endangered Irrawaddy dolphins.
